Nvidia Shield vs Fire TV Stick 4K: HLG, Dolby Vision etc. - is it worth it?

by Ten-Twentythree

I'm abandoning my good old Fire TV 4k (2nd gen) and already have a Nvidia Shield en route to me :-)

Leaving all the extra features and the comparably very good hardware of the Shield aside, I'm wondering if Amazon's current Fire TV generation which apparently supports all there is in terms of 4K video gimmicks is possibly the better choice.

I'm currently a subscriber of Netflix and Amazon Video. Am I missing out of something in terms of video / image quality if I stick with the Shield which only supports HDR?

Regular HDR10 is static HDR Metadata. Such HDR data is the same for the whole movie.

Edit: spelling :

DolbyVision is dynamic HDR10 metadata that can adjust on a scene basis to really get the best out of HDR10 video.

If you have an expensive 4K HDR10 DolbyVision certified TV, why not try and get the best picture quality out of it ?

Virtually all recent original Netflix content is available in DV. 4K HDR YouTube works on the FireTV Stick 4K as well, the old Shield chipset does not support that either.

There is an ever increasing amount of DV content in the Apple iTunes library available for the Apple TV 4K.

Do you have a TV that can receive and more importantly render that signal?

There's a LOT of TVs out there which can accept HDR signal (and are thus labeled "HDR", "Dolby Vision", etc.) but the actual panel is not capable of rendering even the proper HDR10 gamut.

I don't know of anything out there yet that supports HLG.

For me, the shield is worth every penny. Brilliant for streaming and gaming. It’s in a league of its own.
