best app for playing mkv from NAS and method (NFS/SMB/etc.)

by Omgfunsies

what is the best way to play Mkv HD files from my NAS (wired)

I have an nvidia shield and mi box as well. Would be great if there was something like infuse for Android TV.

VLC seems to work but feels kind of crappy UI wise. ANy recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have plex but would prefer to not use plex for the extremely high def files.

Kodi all the way

I use Kodi on our Shield TV to play mkvs across my home network.

Kodi is the best one for that purpose

Archos video player has SMB support and the UX is awesome.

shellbross

Kodi is great if you only have one media streaming device. If, however, you want an easy to set up backend service that can stream/share from your NAS that tracks start/stop positions in all the different clients, I would 100% recommend emby. Kodi can do everything for free, but every client has to be set up manually. With emby, you set up on the backend and just install the client apps. SUPER easy to set up, and just works well. Does essentially the same thing as Plex. Just much more responsive team.

Once you set it up - Kodi. Also, PLEX comes to mind. Both have pleasant UI, With Kodi you can change a lot in terms of UI and choose skins.

PS. Plex ate its own lunch when it came to creating a lightweight package (which it is not) suitable for all platforms (which it is not)

mount your nas on the shield and you can use pretty much anything. But I find myself using emby(shield server) and kodi the most these days.

I use Kodi & have everything networked with my rig as the hub so all I have to do is select whichever SMB share I want to get the content on that particular device, be it mine or my S/Os or my servers.

Any device on my WiFi can access everything, makes for simple access for anyone who happens to be here.

REDoneofone

kodi works great. have you not tried it?

PalebloodSky

I use Kodi for all my media loaded in with the art etc. and VLC if it's just a single file.

FreakDeckard

Kodi and VLC for fallback

Plex and SPMC have the best TV UI imo

real_with_myself

I use Nova player (it's a fork of Archos player). Works without any issues.

I still think spmc is better than kodi. Don't @me

I asked a similar question recently. Kodi is one answer or FX if you just want a simple player. However, on Kodi, you must set the SMB version to at least version 2 - and, if I recall correctly, that setting is only available in Expert settings mode
