Cheep chinese Box with real ATV

by Complexur

I am looking for a cheap Android TV box, and there are alot to choose from. But it looks like most of them run regular Android with some kind of skin on top and not Android TV? Any suggestions for some that use the real deal?

The only cheap ATV is the MiBox.

I'd echo the Ematic Jetstream. Same chipset as the mibox, but it has 2 USB ports and Ethernet. But either choice is better than one of the unlicenced Chinese boxes running Android TV. If you go the cheap Chinese route, you open yourself up to issues with steaming Netflix reliably in HD or 4k. You also could be missing DRM like widevine or playready, which would leave you unable to use things like Vudu and Prime. You'd also lose the Chromecast functionality.

Original Mi Box (not the newer S model), $17 at local Walmart if you can still find them -

Ematic Jetstream IMO at that price point. I use it as my second bedroom ATV. No complaints.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I live in Norway so buying from Walmart will be tricky. It's actually easiest to buy from China as they have free shipping and it's delivered right in my mailbox. But i will avoid the cheep bad ones then. Thanks!

I also notice that you can install Android TV on a raspberry pi. I have a few of those laying around so might test that also. Netflix and such will probably not work though.
