I noticed that playing HD movies in VLC makes the video lag/stutter... while playing the same video in Kodi and MX player is perfectly fine...
is there some settings to turn on/off that could fix the issue in VLC?
I know I just can watch it on Kodi or MX player but I prefer VLC over them...

Is it when subtitles appear? That is a bug in VLC..
I am using VLC 3.4.2 for my Sony A80j TV and I had these issues too - drop frames and stutter while playing any kind of videos from hdd with subtitles on. So I enabled PIP play video in background and I selected a subtitle size. Now videos play smooth. Hope this helps.
Have you tried the same test on MX player?
