Mi Box S + Netflix = No 5.1 sound problem

by js305

Hi, I bought recently this box for unified experience (using netflix and hbo go). Almost everything is ok, except there is no 5.1 audio tracks on netflix. Mi box S is connected to my old yamaha rv450 thru toslink (similiar to this https://b.allegroimg.com/original/01ab4f/f76b18604995bc3a092ab77ccdab ). However I can play demo 5.1 files from Kodi (with passtrough setting on). My ampli reads audio as 5.1 correctly.

You can see my mi box settings here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gVGcRJNpZb_UwwgpCUlhvSJ_ql5JNoMf?usp=sharing

You can also see photos from Xbox One and mi box on same movie. Why netflix not let my mi box see 5.1 audio track?

ps. In audio settings I can only pick between PCM or Auto, someone asking about always option - there is no such option.

You need a 5.1 capability ID through your HDMI to see 5.1 audio option in Netflix, there's no parameter to override it and force 5.1 output when HDMI says only stereo.

But either way, Netflix only have DD+ audio for 5.1, and it's not compatible with Toslink. Toslink only support regular DD or DTS 5.1.

And even worse, DD+ on the MiBox is buggy, either on Netflix or Prime, the sound stutter like crazy... I never found a way to solve that issue.

Mi box doesnt convert EAC3 to AC3 which it should and hopefully will be fixed in a future update. Netflix 5.1 is all EAC3 audio. when you use a toslink cable you will not get audio because toslink doesnt support EAC3.

Only fix for this is to use hdmi audio or find a receiver that plays EAC3 audio through the HDMI port.

Amazon prime is the same way.

mibox 3 which i have doesn't do that either. infact it cant do DTS 5.1 over HDMI too, hope mibox s have that fixed. i have to use kodi for my emby and plex shares which plays dts fine.

Dolby Audio support, even on supposedly licensed Dolby Audio media players like the Mi Boxes is really very poor with Android TV media players.

Xiaomi have been falsely advertising "Dolby Audio" support on the Mi boxes since it's 2016 release.

It has never worked properly like other Dolby Audio licensed media players, the Amazon FireTV's, Apple TV's and XBOX.

On the Mi Box - 5.1 EAC3/DD+ Netflix has never been able to be downmixed into 5.1 DD only audio like you would expect and see on the media players above.

Worse is that 5.1 DD+ has audio dropouts on the Mi Box when using the Netflix and Kodi Apps.

The new v8.1 Oreo - Mi Box S - no longer support Kodi HD audio passthrough either. The 2016 v8.0 Oreo - Mi Box still does.

Which all adds up to one great big Xiaomi - audio clusterfcuk !
