Is there any way to control the volume of my sound system connected via optical cable?

by NickeManarin

I just got a Sony 55x900f (and I have a Razer Leviathan audio system), so I'm still learning what are my limits with this hardware.

Right now, whenever I want to control the volume, I have to stand up, approach the Razer Leviathan and press the buttons.

Is it possible to control the volume of my Razer Leviathan (that is connected via optical cable) by simply using the TV remote?

(I'm on Android 7, btw)

Try this

  • Set Razer volume to Max
  • Set TV settings - audio - headphone/audio out - audio out (variable)

I think your only option in this situation is a universal remote.

You're doing yourself a favor anyway if you get something like the harmony hub (or companion?? it's the one that has the hub deal but comes with a physical remote also).

My TV is optical to my sound bar and my TV very much controls the volume of my sound bar. I can literally see the numbers on the led of my sound bar adjust. There's no hdmi touching my sound bar, either. Just the optical and a power cord.

That's with a Sony vizio and an LG sound bar.

Stupid question, since I have no idea - is it possible to have a sound bar connected via optical and Bluetooth at the same time? BT would control volume level from a TV, while optical for an actual data transfer :)?

As far as I know, SPDIF is line level, meaning no adjust possible.

You need a universal remote for that to work. I know Xfinity allows for the volume buttons to control a Soundbar or stereo if you have Xfinity for tv service. I recommend the Logitech harmony hub and remote as it's smart and looks nice

Yes there is a way. My Vizio TV only supports HDR through HDMI1 which also happens to be the only ARC HDMI port ( dumb ).

Anyway, since I want HDR and need to control my Sony SoundBar ( which does not support HDR HDMI Pass-through ) I connected my TV out sound to the SoundBar using optical. I then connected TV HDMI2 to the SoundBar HDMI input and set the TV to passthrough.

Although the sound is being passed through optical, all CEC related commands are passed through the HDMI cable allowing for full power on/off cycle and volume control.

If I had to complain, outside of the said Vizio stupidity, it would be that volume control has a slight delay and is not instant.

It is technically possible, but you wont get it running without an extra app. I had the same problem and did an app which seeks for volume change on the tv and then adjust the toslink volume too. Try to connect it via headphone output if its possible and you dont need surround.

Yes, this is called HDMI-CEC though some TVs rebrand this - Sony afaik calls it "Bravia Sync" :eyeroll:
