First time with an android tv box, need some help

by iamthatkyle

Hello all, so I'm currently living in China and got an android TV box and installed Express VPN on it and was ready to then start installing all the apps needed to enjoy a decent life on my sofa after work.

I have a MINIX Neo U1, installed an older version of Netflix, which still only played videos at like 140p.

I installed bbc iplayer app, which didn't work at all, yet when i watched iplayer directly from the website, it worked fine. I have Kodi but don't understand what it is for. Is there an All 4 apk that works? Do they need to be in Kodi? Looking for British TV if you haven't guessed yet.

I could do with some tips and links and apks to figure out how to properly set up my TV box.

Thanks

That's technically not an Android TV box, that's just an Android box. Android TV is a specialized version of Android created by Google for usage with a TV, while the box is just Android with a large launcher. Anyway, it probably doesn't work correctly because Netflix needs Widevine L1 DRM to stream in 1080p otherwise it will stream at 480p at a poor bitrate. Kodi is a very versatile media player with a UI designed for TVs that is used by many people for it's add-on support, as people have created add-ons that facilitate questionable free streaming websites to get free movies and TV shows. I wouldn't recommend screwing with the add-ons as it's sort of a legal gray area (downloading to HDD and hosting is illegal but there's nothing about streaming?) but if you have some offline files I'd definitely recommend Kodi. As for iPlayer, I've never gotten it to work in the US. Probably should try some paid VPNs...

Not sure how it will work in China but it’s worth a try. https://cotomovies.com

Also, if a streaming app doesn’t work try turning off your VPN.

Also, I deleted Kodi last year. It’s getting less and less support now. For some it works fine but for me it was a pain in the ass.

No, just install them to the box like regular apps.
