New mi box s questions

by DjrTrump

Hello, I have recently bought a mi box s - my first android TV. I have connected it to my FHD TV and set the resolution at 1080 60hz (as is supported by my TV). The setup went great but I am facing a few problems:

  1. my router (2.4Ghz g/b/mixed band) sits just 3 feet away from the mibox and gives excellent signals. Although my FUP limit expired I get 2mbps on all my devices. However, I am getting almost 0 speed on mi box s to the point that even Youtube app does not open and asks for checking internet [ the internet works fine on other devices]. I then tried 2.4ghz band hotspot from my samsung and voila, the device worked fine on my 4G with nice streaming. the phone was kept like a feet away from box. PLEASE HELP solving it as I need the box to run on my home wifi [3 ft away from box]
  2. I left the system off [simple power button click on remote] for 30 minutes and when I returned there was an extreme stutter. I hoped that it would go away after a minute but it did not. What to do for this?
  3. Any basic apps you would like to recommend for me to download on the box? suggestions please :D

You can try a few troubleshooting.

  1. Power off MI box (unplug power adapter) and try again
  2. Try speedtest from MiBox, (speed test app or test ( fast.com ) from a browser app(if any)
  3. install terminal applications on Mi Box (ex: Termux) and do a ping/trace test and look for packet drops)

As your box was recently purchased, did it receive a software update after you set it up?

The problems you've described are pretty common for us with the Mi Box S. Most of these problems can be mitigated by a Factory Reset of the device after it updates to the newest software.

If that doesn't work here are some things I've done.

  1. An ethernet adapter (the Amazon Basics one works great) will give you a wired connection to the router. I still have the occasional issue where when my Mi Box wakes from sleep it says "No ethernet connection" but this seems to be a result of my VPN app. Keeping Wifi turned on along with the ethernet connection allows me to load apps and start videos until the ethernet connects again.
  2. I have also experienced the slow stutter, and fix it by a quick reboot (hold down power on the remote until the reboot button appears).

It's a cheap device, and has its issues. My hope is that there will continue to be software updates/bug fixes, but they're never as fast as we want.

If you haven't yet, make sure the box is up to date at both the system and app level. Then, do a full reboot. I had lots of trouble with responsiveness until ALL of the updates had applied, which for whatever reason took a few reboots to accomplish. As I recall I had to pull the power at least once to get things to apply. The out of the box experience left quite a bit to be desired, IMHO.

Since then, I've had no problems or slowdowns that I can recall.

Also, if you enable developer options, you can change the animation speeds to 0.5x - makes a pretty noticeable difference in the UI speed and perceived responsiveness.

I can't speak to your wifi issues but no problems here with Unifi gear.
