Skystream 3 (Three) Review

by conorlimerick

Just wanted to post a quick review of my experience with the skystream 3.

First off, it didn't arrive when it should, despite me contacting the company a week beforehand to ask when would be the best time to purchase (I was travelling to a hotel for 5 days and needed to have it delivered it there). Was advised when to make the purchase but it didn't arrive. In fairness, I had ordered a Skystream 3 and a Skystream 3 plus. It was the Plus that delayed the shipment. Customer service were apologetic and nice but nonetheless, it hadn't arrived. I'm living in Europe and was travelling to the US so intended on hand carrying it back on the plane. Skystream then wanted to charge me $25 for postage for the SKystream 3 Plus that didn't arrive, even though I emailed two weeks previous to arrange. Anyway..

So I trialed the Skystream 3 and only 3 buttons on the remote control actually worked and so the box was unusable. I contacted customer care who agreed to send a free remote control to me. Meanwhile, I plugged in a wireless mouse and keyboard just so I could use the box while waiting for the remote control and it crashed between 5-10mins. At first it was just with IPTV service. I'd get 6/7mins in and the box would reset. Then it was happening regardless of the application. I eventually transferred my IPTV app (Smart STB) to my smart tv and it worked perfectly. I would expect the standalone box to be able to handle streaming far better than the standalone tv.

While this was ongoing, customer care were trying to combine the replacement remote control into the shipment of the 3 Plus box AND have me pay the $25 for postage. Bear in mind this package contained a replacement remote control for a faulty unit and a 3 PLus which was promised to be delivered the week earlier but was delayed. I lost it and just told them to cancel the 3 Plus order and I'm sending back the box for a refund.

Really annoyed as it seems like a good box on paper but boy was it a different story when it came down to actually using it. Beware.

Is that an actual Android TV or is it your typical knock off running standard Android? Not familiar with Skystream where I'm from.

I had a pretty terrible experience with the company as well. I expected an amazing box and instead go to semi substandard Kodi box. They marketed it as a premier device but in talking with them on the phone any question that was outside of something as simple as being a Kodi user left them giving me foolish answers. I had a problem with mouse inputs and after a month they finally agreed with me that I got a defective unit. I had to pay for the shipping to send it back to them so the Box costing me a very large amount owing to the extreme shipping prices. In the end I could have had another box just for the prices I paid for shipping. At least they were good enough to refund me as they were supposed to. Now I haven't a95x Max coming in the mail from China and I'm very excited cuz I think this one will be heads and tails above the skystream. Had some good help Robert Joseph of ghostware. Definitely recommend using him if you need a box. He helped me choose the a95x. Only reason I didn't get a ghost where box is because I really like having a navbar bar and notifications bar so we agreed the ghostware wasn't for me.

Here is the deal with SkyStream. They are a great company in my experience. However no one is perfect. They are really geared towards new users that don’t have the time to learn things,or simply don’t want to learn. If you are experienced and tech savvy it is not the box for you. The custom set up that is provided is great! It is minimal work to set up. An Updater app is used to keep things running smoothly. The newest box is a tweaked X96max. One of the problems is that users try to customize things that may not be able to be done on the tweaked hardware. It is made to run the SkyStream programs.I have every box they came out with. I also have other devices that I tinker with and test things on including the Nvidia Shield and FireTV box. I use the SkyStream as my main device for viewing. Again,if you are tech savvy, this is not the device for you.
