Reformat the drive to NTFS and connect back to the shield, if it asks to re-format the drive, DONT. You wont be able to copy fires back and forth, but at least you wont have an encrypted drive thats unreadable on your PC.
A Raspberry Pi3 will do this, let you copy files back and forth over the network, but its basically a Kodi box (no Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc).
it's normal AndroidTV does not allow writing on external HDDs
