Which HDD to hook up to android TV box?

by scaredofshaka

I have several external HDs with their own power supply but they all start stuttering& lagging when playing movies above 720p. Could anyone tell me what I need to look for?

I used to own an older Minix.

Back then XBMC/Kodi was new, in beta and didnt handle 720p videos very well. Your media player shouldn't have this problem since its a quad core. Make sure you have the latest version of Kodi (17.6 was last week, 18 was released a few days ago) and try to replace the USB cable if your still using the one that came with the Neo U1.

What are you using to play the movies? Could be the app you're using that's the issue. I have no such issues on my Skyworth Android TV box, and I play a range of items from 480p up to 1080p (don't havea 4K TV) from an external 4TB HDD, through Kodi.

I use this shared over my network connected to the USB 3.0 port on my router (WRT32X): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZTRXFBA/

Have the movie/tv collections in Kodi and sometimes use a USB flash drive with VLC. All of it is perfectly smooth at 1080p videos output to 4K with both my Shield TV and Mi Box.
