Mi Box S is as bad as Mi Box

by Skindredas

Hello,

I have sold my bugged Mi Box, got Mi Box S. I got the American model now from Wallmart at sale (39,99 USD) (old was from China). This product still have all of these problems people described in various posts. I do not understand how they get away with this. But, lesson learned, no more Xiaomi.

Wifi 2,4Ghz is still bad, it connects shows full strength and perfect signal, but networking just does not work for me. With 5 Ghz it works... fine... I can stream 4k video with my phone with either 2,4Ghz or 5ghz, but not with this box, it just lags. Only thing they fixed is that box starts with remote without any problems now, old box still has same problems with remote hang and not waking up from sleep.

I can compare Mi Box S experience with Sony Android TV. I have XE80 model. The difference is night and day. Sony TV video playback is silky smooth either with ethernet or wifi, does not matter if you throw 480p or 4k file at it. TV is snappy and works perfectly. Such a great product. On the other side, Mi Box video playback is so poor, even low quality video does not play well, you can feel stuttering, it is just not as smooth as Sony TV, does not matter which player you use VLC/KODI/NOVA etc.. SMB and USB playback is just bad on Mi Box.... I am not even going to talk about streaming, it is just horrible with this Box.

Sadly EU (EDIT: Lithuania) users do not have any options, in my country (Lithuania) only AndroidTV boxes they sell here are Mi Box and Mi Box S, both are shit. It costs a lot to import Nvidia Shield from US, because it costs more than 150 you have to pay not only VAT, but also import taxes and all the fees to all the 3rd parties and customs :(

In my honest opinion. The only real way to get proper AndroidTV here in EU countries(EDIT: Lithuania) is to buy Sony Android TV. Sony TV`s are quality products, zero problems, I am satisfied. I thought I will get away with cheaper non android tv+tv box in bedroom, but it did not workout :(

The Shield is available in most European countries.

I have to disagree with you about Sony being flawless. I have a 2015 Bravia and it's awful. The lag is so bad that it takes five seconds for the system to respond to a home button push. The frame drops scrolling around the Android TV interface are astounding. It's full of Sony junk apps and it's buggy as hell. Apps are always crashing or failing to load. The TV forgets my TV channel edits so I have to scroll through dozens of useless channels. I've been re-tuning and editing channels for years now over multiple updates the process itself is ridiculously painful and buggy besides the fact it never remembers my edits more than a couple of days. I really hate the TV!

BTW. both Box 3 & Box S have the same exact specs.
