I’m looking into developing a way to push notifications to my android tv. I want to find out if it’s physically possible to push a notification to appear over the top of a hdmi input.
E.g. the doorbell rings, I will have an app that monitors this and then grab an image of who’s at the door and then push it to the tv in the corner with a notification.
Before a waste vasts amount of time digging into the ring api, I want to know if this is possible :)
Would really appreciate anyone else’s input.
I’ve got a Sony KD-55XF8096
Yes, it's possible to display toasts over an input and/or video.
The free app Notifications for Android TV does this quite well actually, and does allow you to include/display images that are included in the notification. Unfortunately, Ring doesn't supply the images with their notifications like most other smart doorbells do. I use this app for Ring and phone calls, works great!! Here's how my notifications look on my TV. I have it setup on my Sony TV, but use a Shield TV as my main content source...but setting it up on my Sony TV lets it display over any HDMI input I'm using. You can adjust transparency of the notification...it usually looks better when over a video instead of text, lol.
I think the big trick here would be determining which image (and how to get it converted to an image) you'd want from the latest video on your Ring account.
Peak around before you do too much digging into the Ring API. There are already methods, possibly outdated, but a useful start, published that pull the latest videos (but I don't think live video) from your account. Search around r/HomeAutomation for the folks who setup smart tablets on their walls and such...I know one of them posted how to get the videos and show them on the tablet, outside of the Ring app.
We were talking about this in r/Ring the other week: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ring/comments/al83vm/-/efcxl8q
