Nvidia Shield TV 10-bit HDR broken?

by sn0rbaard

Hi everyone, first post on reddit. I play high bitrate 4K HEVC HDR files "flawlessly" through Plex, however, 10-bit files look good but not great, I notice colour banding in certain scenes. I went into my projector settings' info menu and it shows that the signal from the Shield TV is only 8-bit HDR. I assume this is the problem. I have automatic colometrity setting in developer options enabled, on the latest software update. Any advice to get the Shield TV to output in 10-bit will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Seems the issue resides with Plex. Edit2: Issue appears when Shield TV and/or media player reverts to the actual video file refresh rate of 23.98Hz , like what the hell!!

I've said this for a year at least, I don't trust Plex's support for 10-bit HDR. Some say they don't have an issue when the HDR content is direct playing, and that may be true, but their support site said for the longest time they don't support 10-bit HDR . The Shield has no problem playing 10-bit HDR, the Shield is not the issue. This is why I use Kodi to stream my local content from my PC to my Shield. With a few skin customizations and settings tweaks, not only does it looks like my own personal Netflix, but my 4K HDR Blurays play flawlessly, with 10-Bit HDR, Dolby Atmos/DTS:X & the works.

Projectors struggle to do DCI, let alone BT2020, I think you may have better success looking at what color modes are most ideal for your projector - it may not be mapping the values adequately enough.

The colorimetry setting in developer options has nothing to do with the bitdepth output. It only switches from Rec.708 to Rec.2020.

Does your projector even support HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 inputs? And if yes, do you have the UHD Color setting (of Ultra HD Deep Color) enabled on the projector?

Plex currently does not have 4k HDR Tone mapping support.

What's really broken about the Shield TV is the remote. Biggest most unresponsive piece of shit i've ever used.
