Get Android TV Oreo for an "Unsupported" Device

by TheMulti0

Hi all.

I'm rocking a Sony Bravia KDL-50W809C (Late-2015 Model) which didn't receive the latest Android Oreo update.

I was wondering, is there a way to install it on my TV?

Thanks!

No :/

Why?

Your TV has a slightly older Mediatek SoC. It's not very different and only marginally less performant.

Irregardless, Sony decided against supporting it. There is no way to install the update and no custom ROM support for your TV. You're out of luck.

There is no technical reason for Sony to not provide this update by the way.

Philips is rolling out Oreo to their 4k Android TVs with the exact same SoC that's inside your TV. They are even offering hardware upgrades for even older TVs to make them compatible.

Sony's approach to long term support is essentially: "Fuck you, buy a new TV!"

You might be able to find a custom rom for it, but I wouldn't know how to go about it. And it would probably mess with your DRM capabilities.

On a three year old TV, sorry but you're dreaming

You could put a screencap of the Oreo update up on your tv and imagine you got the update. Still better than your current condition.

The only device that you can get updates at least couple of years is Nvidia Shield TV.

So, the answer is no, it's not possible to get Oreo for your TV device.

You can try installing it on a usb and running the update from there?
