I agree with @513 below, a well written article.
For a fast media player you need these things:
- high quality DDR RAM
- proper thermal cooling so you do not get CPU throttled when everything heats up
- a decent GPU
- an optimised OS like Android Oreo or the even better Android Pie
- AC (MIMO) WiFi or better - Gigabit Ethernet
Widevine L1 DRM & HDCP are must haves these days for copy protected streaming services, even if a device is not Netflix Approved or Google Certified because Kodi Leia now has working, usable - Prime Video, Netflix & HBO (Europe) Addons.
I was using 5.1 DD+ 4K Kodi Netflix, just yesterday on such a device. Works fine. The device is NOT Netflix approved or Google Certified.
Mi Box is OK for non demanding users that only need 2.0 audio.
It still has pretty poor Firmware support, but that is what you get with any cheap media player.
It however did get upgraded from relatively slow Marshmallow > faster Oreo. That does not happen with other cheap Chinese media players.
The one thing cheap AMLogic media players can do well is dual boot and run the excellent LibreELEC or CoreELEC Kodi. In fact it's about the best Kodi experience you can get then.
It's powerful more than enough. If you want game emulation, running Android TV as Plex server we can buy the overpriced Nvidia Shield. Android TV 8.0 is well optimized and is running super fast. Kudos to Android TV team. With Mi box and AIDA64 I have always free 600-800mb free and opened 5 apps like Netflix(always opened), YouTube, Vimeo, HBO Now. Enough with the American nationalism at tech. Other countries do tech too. World Wide Web you get it?
I buy a mibox 4 , and I really don't liked, I prefer the "cheap chinese TV boxes" you can do whatever you want and install whatever you want, Android TV is a pain in the ass
