How to share a PC media folder to VLC on androidTV

by 1eo89

Hello guys,

Before I reset my computer I had a shared folder of my media that I could access on my androidTV via VLC as long as the computer was turned on and connected to the local network. But now that I have reset my computer I don't seem to be able to configure it again. I shared the folder and I go to VLC on the TV and the computer shows up but it's asking me for a password this time around. If you could help me that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any impute.

Password is your login password to your computer.

If it's just for media, might be easier to setup your PC for DLNA or UPnP (should be automatic with shared folders/media) and get a DLNA capable app.

Alternatively, you can install Plex Media Server on your PC, map it to your media folders, and install the Plex app where it's needed. This builds sort of your own personal Netflix library out of your own media and shares it across every device you connect with the app or web browser. Supports movies, tv shows, music, and pictures.

Why not make a share with full rights for everyone?

After sharing a folder or drive via SMB share you use the login data you gave access to when setting up SMB share.

Setting up SMB share is a bit hard. I would suggest you find a nice comfy guide but to summarize you will be right clicking what you want to share, opening properties, choosing the sharing tab and choose between share and advance sharing. Think of the difference like one just gives read access and the other can do read/write.

Have you tried disabling password protection on shared folder ?

I also had the same problem, what did the trick for me is re-activating SMB 1 which is disabled for security purposes, or alternatively try the lastest VLC beta which now supports SMB 2.
