Nvidia Shield + LG TV + Receiver (denon)?

by CoryCA

I've been pondering getting a receive of some kind (probably Denon) for better audio quality than what my LG TV speakers can do. Right now the NVidia Shield is connected to the TV and turns it on and off, too. It's used mostly for Kodi and Netflix, occasionally Amazon Prime Video and StbEmu.

Because there's almost always a catch somewhere, things don't always 100% work together as expected, I want ask the hive mind if they've done this and what I need to look out for, what didn't work for you

Like maybe the Shield doesn't play well with a receiver's remote control, or don't put it on an ARC port but a normal HDMI is fine. I'd rather know too much than nothing and feel I wasted the money.

Recommended on which receivers gladly accepted. Thanks in advance!

I have Sheild connected to a Pioneer SC-LX87 receiver, that is connected to Panasonic Vierra and everything works. HDMI CEC switches the TV and the Receiver (also switches the source if it's already on something else) on & off. Selected passthrough audio to the SC-LX87.

HDMI CEC also makes sure my TV remote works with Shield and the Shield remote works with the reciever (limited to volume).

I have also configured so that I can switch the TV off but leave the Shield & reciever on. This is for when I want to stream music, e.g., Tidal, without having to keep the TV on all the time.

You can always take audio out of the LG via the optical or headphone ports. Anything is better than the inbuilt shitty LG speakers.

I run a 2.1 Speaker setup from the LG heaphone socket, then process the sound with an EQ app on the Shield. It's not quite surround sound but it works pretty good and is a massive improvement over the inbuilt speakers. It's a quick and cheap upgrade.

I am using a Onkyo TX-NR575 with my Shield and Hisense tv. It mostly works OK. The only problem is that when I turn everything off with the Shield remote everything goes off like they should and then turns right back on again. If I turn off the tv or receiver they all turn off and stay off. It didn't do that before the 7.xx updates. I could probably fix it in the CEC settings but am too lazy to go through all the settings in each unit to see what works.

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent budget setup. The Onkyo is fantastic and works great with the Shield in every regard. I have 4 Klipsch KG1.2 speakers with a matching KV-2 center channel speaker, all from the early 90s.

Whatever receiver you get, make sure you also get good speakers. There is tons of excellent speakers from the 80s and 90s that you can get for cheap on craigslist or ebay. I got all my speakers for about $200 and they sound better than my friends $2,000 new speaker setup.

Make sure you get a newer receiver that does HDMI 2.0 and 4K.

I have my Shield connected to a Denon AVR-X3300W to an LG OLED65B7P and it works great. I have a Harmony Elite remote so i never touch the Denon, LG or Shield remotes. The Harmony controls everything. I have the Shield set to send the bitstream audio (passthrough) to the Denon and everything direct plays perfectly. If you want everything to directplay, make sure the receiver you get supports all the audio formats you expect to use and all the resolutions. The X3300W supports all lossless audio formats and 4K@60 and HDR10/Dolby Vision so everything works flawlessly.
