NVIDIA Shield Settings/Issue

by Ghost_Toast

So, I recently got a 4k TV (Vizio P55-F1) and the NVIDIA Shield. For the resolution on the Shield, I have it set to 4K 59.940Hz. This, as I can tell, causes a 4k resolution to always be sent to the TV. Even when playing a 720p video, I can hit the info button on the TV and it shows 2160p. Is there any way to change this? Should I just leave it and continue to have the Shield upscale everything? I thought my TV would do a better job, but I am not sure. Any suggestions?

To you, what looks better? Don’t worry about what we think.

I'm really confused with what you want to happen. You'd rather have black borders around your videos if they're 720p on a 2160p screen? Upscaling on TVs (at least in the three 4K TVs I have between my apartment and my parents' house) is done phenomenally and is miles better than using borders.

Set it to 4k 24hz if u don't want soap opera effect.. let it upscale and set your players (emby/Plex/Kodi) to allow refresh rate switching

Yeah, unfortunately ShieldTV right now doesn't support resolution switching and the upscaler algorithm isn't quite as good as on some higher end TVs. Sadly there's really nothing you can do about it - the only app I've seen that could switch resolution was Kodi 18, where you can set it to run at 1080p/720p and that will force the TV to upscale. For other apps you're out of luck.
