Is Android TV planning a better UI?

by Explorer200

So I love Chromecast and Google home. Google assistant is great, imperfect but great I have a Pixel 2XL that I love

...but I hate the Android TV UI

Seeing as TVs are virtually all smart and connected to Netflix, plex, Hulu, etc these days. Why hasn't Google put more effort into the Android TV UI?

There is sooooo much potential there, but it's abysmal. I actually think the propriety TV UIs like Samsung's Tizen and Web OS are better... And Im usually a huge Google fan

Google just introduced a brand new Android TV UI with Oreo, so I doubt it'll get more than a light refresh any time soon. I agree that it's not really that good; Play Next and the app channels are good ideas in theory, but they're so poorly supported.

Apparently, it was quoted by the head of Android TV at CES that Google is working on another redesign for Android TV, which will probably be announced at Google I/O

I don't get it, what's wrong with the UI?

I just want system wide picture in picture.

How about Android Pie on Android TV first? I know we don't have any "Pixel" ATV devices, but Google hasn't even announced anything related to ATV 9.0, have they? Meanwhile, Android Q betas are right around the corner.

I must be in the minority, but i love the UI.

I don't care about the UI, I've mapped all my favorite apps to buttons on the remote so I rarely even see the UI nowadays.

The design is so incoherent. Adding channels and play-next to the original interface would have been fine.

Seems likely that future redesigns will similarly focus on pushing recommendations rather than a clean, aesthetic user experience.

You can use custom launchers. It is Android after all. You arent stuck worth the default home screen.
