Mi Box S to play 4K REMUX over ethernet, buffer issues in KODI.

by Jadeko

It's all in the title. I'm using a MiBox S with a USB/ethernet adapter which i thought would allow me to play 4k remuxes (~60GB) over the ethernet with no buffer on Kodi. Turns out it buffers quiet a lot. I'm pretty much out of options here, and i'm considering trying to up the default cache in Kodi.

Any help is appreciated !

EDIT: Tried upping the cache, problem still here :/

EDIT2: Forgot to mention, the file is played locally through SMB protocol

EDIT3: On recomendation from u/pechius i tested the local speed connection with iperf, results are DOWN=58mbbps UP=154 ; Kinda weird results and to sure how to solve it :/ My adapter is the UGreen 1000mbps, seemed reccommended a lot for the Xiaomi Box

Maybe the problem is with the source? What are you using? SMB share? Plex? Do ypu have a NAS or dedicated server?

If you want to check if your mi box actually receives gigabit speeds, you can use iperf3. Download app analiti on the mibox, set up iperf server on one of the wired PCs (probably best if you do that on the server itself) and see what you get.

GuinnessWithinUs

How much of a cache does the Mi Box S allow outside of the app itself? Maybe just a limitation of the hardware to process at that bitrate?

I ran into a similar issue attempting to stream 4K Remuxes through the KODI Android app on my Sony Bravia, however my older Chromebox with upgraded RAM has no issues streaming the same content through KODI with zero buffering. Both are wired.

The box is simply not capable of reading files that heavy. Never was able to read them on a hard disk, it's built for streaming 4k (25 Mb/s). With selected 4k files I was able to run them but at the first pause or maybe when I tried to skip forward it started struggling and lagging.

DontKnowHowToEnglish

Probably a dumb question but are you sure you can play that 4k remux effortlessly on the Mi Box if you play it locally?

There's no downside in trying, it's very simple.

Bodycount9

Download VLC player and see if it happens there.

If you want to play it over LAN, then it's okay.

If you want to play it over Internet, no, you will have buffer issue.

Seems slow, but the mi box is usb 2 so no gigabit speeds. Good wifi ac is probably faster. Maybe check your cabling and test with proper gigabit hardware.

If your host is linux, nfs has lower overhead than cifs, worth checking.
