New Nexus Player says no updates availible

by MarkH123456

Hello! I recently bought a Nexus Player on ebay for 40$ in order to use steamlink and I would like to update to oreo. Ive heard about how bad oreo is, but I still would like to upgrade. When I click on the about page and system updates, it tells me your up to date even though the box is running Android Lollipop. Does anyone have a possible solution to fix this? Do I need to wait for it to rollout to me?

Lol you're actually better off with Lollipop. Oreo is terrible on the Nexus Player. It's slow and just had a lot of problems from my experience. Also, the update had been bricking Nexus Players. Maybe the solution was to just pull the Oreo update. I actually wrote a howto to downgrade to Lollipop and keep it there. That's all I run now.

Did you buy it new in box or was it used or refurbed? When it boots up on the Google screen does it show a (unlocked) lock icon at the bottom of the screen?

It is very possible the PO had done the existing steps floating around to revert to a pre-Oreo firmware and lock it there.

If none of these are the case, then ignore me.

As /u/snowzach pointed out already, using the linked steps to get it to Nougat and prevent it from updating to Oreo are highly recommended. About the only thing you get out of Oreo is the updated launcher which doesn't mean much but a different layout. Otherwise Nougat is a lot more stable on the NP. There should be little to no app compatibility issues. I'd imagine there should be none as there are still a lot of Android TV devices on the market that only have Nougat and no further updates (looking at Sony in particular).
