“Remote only” does not mean I bought the Remote only, it means I bought the version without the gaming controller. I wanted to clarify this :)

My only suggestion is to keep an eye on when Amazon are selling their Alexa fire tv 4k remotes. You'll want one once you use that remote for a few weeks.

Also back and home at the same time will sleep the device.

Double tap home for quick app launching

hold home for 2 seconds for quick app launcher

Double tap volume slider will pause the video (if the remote is awake. Can be disabled in settings)

If Plex Media server keeps disappearring you may need to enable developer mode and enable always awake.

Emby has an apk version of their server that runs on the shield as well. Plex is extremely wonky at the best of times on the shield.

You'll probably want the shield TV app if you have an android. It'll offer a keyboard and onscreen mouse which has to help during the first setup run.

X-plore is about the best file manager that'll work with the remote.

If you want to run non TV supported apps you'll need a launcher like HAL launcher. This will show all installed apps not just the ones that are Android TV builds.

There's a GeForce forum that discusses the shield and updates in detail. I'd recommend checking there for botched updates, they happen. It's good to know Nvidia are aware and working on a solution and you're not crazy and unnecessarily resetting your shield.

Press the back and home buttons at the same time to quick put the device to sleep. Double tap the volume slider to mute/unmute. Hold the back button for 2-3s to get to the sleep/restart menu quickly. Enable HDMI-CEC to control your AVR with your shield remote's volume slider (works way better than IR). If you have an Echo, get the Shield skill for Alexa to control your shield with your voice. If you have a Google home, this works natively.

Check out Geforce Now when you get it. You'll need some kind of game controller, borrow one of your friends Xbox or PS controllers. I'm not much of a gamer, by any means, but sometimes it is fun to pull up a random free game on Geforce Now and just play it for an hour. You don't have to own the game, you're playing almost immediately, and it's free, for now at least.

Install Filelinked.

If you are into gaming (and have a Bluetooth controller) you can download emulators for games. Like citra for DS, dolphin for Wii and N64 (I think) RetroArch for almost every console known to man and many more. The shield is really great at Emulating. Search for Nvidia shield an emulator powerhouse uploaded by Modern Vintage Gamer and you'll see

Download or sideload your favorite VPN app. Install Kodi, Cinema HD, and smart YouTube TV.

medaele

Get Kodi from the website, not the play store. Then install no limits build or misfit mod build. (Don't forget to get yourself a reputable VPN)

Download Kore remote (for Kodi) and shield TV remote on your phone for when you lose the tiny ass remote for the shield.

  1. Get the HDHomerun Connect or a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD if in the USA, and enjoy OTA Live Channels. Bonus point if you link Plex with Plex Pass for TV streaming.

  2. Get the Samsung Smartthings Link if you adapted the Smartthings Home Automation ecosystem.

  3. Get a Logitech C920 HD Webcam if streaming games via Twitch.

  4. The usual streaming stuff like Netflix, Amazon, etc. as well as Kodi.

  5. GeForce now with an external controller for your Steam Games or Nvidia streamed games. Nvidia Gamestreaming via LAN if you're lazy to move over to your gaming rig.

  6. Emulators and such programs. (Wii games are sorta fun here).

  7. Setup HDMI-CEC or link with a Logitech Harmony Remote.

  8. IPCamera Viewer?

I never heard anout debris service I will look into it thanks

supercomplainer

Pair some PlayStation controllers and setup some retro emulators. Setup gamestream or moonlight game streaming. Setup Kodi with a IP tv pvr service from YouTube tutorials then buy a subscription off Craiglist

PayLeyAle

If you put a ad blocking program on it such as "Blokada" be sure to white list Netflix and Hulu or it will interfere with them.

Computer_Panda

Hook up controllers and play the free for shield games! Oh there is a 5 hour limit. But then close the game and reopen.

pheexx

Kodi + the fotm streaming addon :)

touristtam

Get the Steam Link app, not the GForce one.

RNNDOM

Goede keuze! Draait hier als een zonnetje

I can gladly say this is one of the best Android TV boxes you could get. In the settings I'm almost certain you can utilize the IR blaster on the remote to control your TV and sound system from the one remote! I have it turn on my TV when I wake up the Shield (my TV is to old to turn on when input is recognized).

Kodi is always good to have (with the right plugins) but can get funky sometimes.

If you use Plex, try running the server off of it! Just pair up a hard drive and you're off to the races! I have it set up so I can transfer my media across my LAN network. That you can Google how to do. It's nice because even when the device is asleep you can access your Plex library remotely, even away from home!

odorous

remote only...............

Drachmaa

Plug it in.

cityhunterspeee

Youtube..a ton of those type of videos! But for me. Iptv..kodi.netflix.prime and youtube..3 emulators and some other games .done.

Fenijks01

Kodi integrate with debrid service like real-debrid and premiumize, you can watch ton of movies and tv shows.

cobyn

You can use Google assistant routines to set a sleep timer, to turn your shield on or off at a specific time

coinzdude

I buy older a-list game titles for dirt cheap on steam, using cheap game license sites, and steam them. So much fun.

Thrashquatch

Look into a emulator front end I been using retrox also look at the FB groups.

hattondjh

I like using ADM (advanced download manager) to download links from Cyberflix. I also love casting games from my pc. I would definitely think about upgrading your router and LAN cables. WiFi is meh. Also, connect a decent hard drive to it.

Stewiqt

In my opinion it is the most worth it tv box I have ever had, its functionality, speed, visual display, remote display, everything, is so good and was worth every penny. One thing I would say is download Morpheus tv, you'll need to go do some research on installing it.

matinandin

Use Gamestream (looks better than moonlight if you've been using that alternative), you can enable a setting to record the screen/gameplay or screenshot on the "System" submenu, SHIELD recently added full support for ds3, 4 XB360/1 controllers via bluetooth, with everything but the google assistant/volume working, and finally put the led brightness on medium cause it can be seen on daylight and doesn't bother at nighttime

phrostbyt

check out plex.. nvidia gamestream, apps for your favorite TV channels

Are you sure you didn't buy the "remote only"?
