Looking to buy a Xiaomi box s to use as a media player but have some questions

by theburningcaller

Hey guys, i'm planning to buy a xiaomi box S to watch MKV Files with DTS Audio from HDD.

But just from a simple google search there's tons of problems of xiaomi box being unable to read NTFS/Exfat HDD's after Oreo OS update and Xiaomi Box S ships with Oreo Update

Should i be concerned? or does this only affect the old models and not the 2018 Models?

also i don't have a receiver/soundbar, i'll be plugging it to my TV using TV Speakers as Audio, would any sound come out if i play a file with DTS/DD Audio? or would the audio be silent?, i'm not looking for great sound quality, i just want the file to play with audio coming out.

Mi Box NTFS support is fixed quite a few months ago, I don't experience any problem aside from the annoying sleep bug.

I would guess audio would be played as stereo only.

Not sure about the HDD format problem, but the Nvidia Shield is Android and has no problem with FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Mac drive formats.

The Shield is still pretty much the best media player box out there (there’s nothing it can’t play, 4K plays over my LAN without a hiccup), and does stacks of other things including Chromecast built in, and playing games; it has the same graphics chipset as the Nintendo Switch!

That’s why I went for the Shield instead of one of the many other lesser boxes like Xiaomi et al.

If your audio receiver supports 5.1 DD/DTS (passthrough) via HDMI then that is what you will get from Apps like Kodi.

Netflix will give you 5.1 audio - IF - your audio receiver support DD+

However a LOT of Mi Box users get 5.1 DD+ audio dropouts.

If your audio receiver support none of that you will get 2.0 PCM audio in all other instances using all Apps.

The 2018 Mi Box S No longer supports 5.1/7.1 Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA audio passthrough when using Kodi due to missing IEC61937 audio standard support in device Firmware.
