Should I buy a Shield now?

by ajobbins

I have a Mi Box now. It's mostly OK, but as we all know there are a few issues. Was thinking about getting a Shield to replace it, but wondering if now is the right time. I only have a 1080P TV at the moment, but looking to get a 4K panel soon, and heard that the Mi Box technically will do 4K, but struggles.

Given the Shield hardware is now a few years old, I don't want to spend a bunch of money only for them to release an updated box soon.

The going story is, until 8k becomes more common, there will be no Nvidia hardware refresh in sight

Now or years ago. Its the benchmark.

Already stated that their wont be a new one for long time, nothing can compete against it, and it works brilliant + updates coming in all the time.

That said, mibox team just released latest beta FW that should fix the wakeup issue and other issues, maybe wait til summer is over and then see?

The Shield is great. Got one on black Friday and love it. It's perfect for streaming and gaming. No performance complaints and regular updates.

Solid yes. It's great.

Check local used sales, FB market place, craigslist, you can sometimes buy a Shield tv at a good price. I just paid $80 last week

I have a little NAS (Odroid XU4 with OMV) with PLEX server running and even playing 80Mbit 4k HDR HEVC movies is buttery smooth on my Mi Box S. It will buffer when using VLC with those very high bitrate files but with PLEX it's flawless. I don't see how a few times more expensive Shield will help here. I only do PLEX streaming and the usual Netflix/HBO etc.

After using and mostly being okay with the Mi Box for about 2 years I bought the Shield TV when it was on sale for $140 over the holidays. No regrets, it's the best streaming device on the market.

To be honest, unless you plan to do some game streaming, retro gaming there are other options out there. It's very versatile.

Shield tv is still top notch. I actually bought a forge tv(yes I know) a couple of weeks ago that came with the controller for $37 and the only difference between the two besides the processor is 1gb of ram. I just put a custom mi box firmware on it and it's my back up box. I will say I installed steam stream beta on my shield tv last night and holy moly that is the best thing ever. I still will always recommend shield tv with the controller. It's still top notch. I've had for two years now. Use it everyday.
