Which Mi box should i buy? Mi box 3 or 4?

by naxster921

Hello guys, i'm currently after a new Android TV box, but i don't know which one to choose.

Both have the same specs (or do they?), but the Mi box 4/S, is the newer one.

I've been using a Mecool M8S Pro L for a while now, and it's working great, even now.

But i want an Android box that supports Chromecasting, which Mi box does :)

I've been reading around and found out that many people have WiFi issues on the Mi box 4, specifically when they are trying to connect to a 5Ghz network.. It somehow doesn't work? And also have issue with the bluetooth pairing with headphones, since it disconnects every now and then.

I've also been reading that with Mi box 3 also have WiFi issue after the Oreo update...

Do you guys have these problems? And do you think it's worth to buy one of them? And which one? :)

Ohh and also, is 8GB HDD and 2GB ram enough as of today? It feels that they are waaay to weak, compared to my Mecool M8S L Pro :/

I have a mibox3 bought in 2016 at US Walmart.

It mostly does everything I need/want without issue. After the Oreo update there have been some issues. I joined the Beta program and the latest OREO beta seems to have resolved all my issues.

I sideloaded Aptoide tv store and am able to install prime video and cravetv both of which function without issue.

I personally intend to eventually replace my mibox with a shield; however I am going to wait until a new shield is released even if it is 2 years from now.

I see no reason to replace my mibox3 at this time.

I never had any wifi issues, however sometime late last year I bought a ugreen usb 3 Ethernet adapter and use that because Ethernet is now readily available near my tv. I.e. I decided to connect everything via Ethernet at that location.

If I were in the market for a new Android TV box I would consider the following:

(A) Nvidia shield if I didn't mind dishing out the cash for it (B) mibox s. I see no reason to choose a mibox3 over a mibox s. Mibox s is almost identical and will likely be supported longer than the mibox3. (C) Amazon fire stick 4k. These things are pretty good if you can live with the UI. They are pretty good value and the wifi definitely works great. We have one upstairs connected via wifi and never had an issue.

Xiaomi is awful with branding, there are two mibox that have official AndroidTV the Mi Box mdz-16-ab and the newer Mi Box S (mdz-22-ab). You can find boxes that seems identical on the outside and are also called "xiaomi mi box" but are totally different products, so you have to check the serial number

Just started using my MiBox 4 again, giving it a second try. Lots of little annoying things I don't like about it. For me, the main selling point is the Google certification, which I believe only comes on the Mibox and Nvidia Shield. If you don't need that, then I think there is a slightly more powerful box, JetStream or something like that, also available from Walmart in the US, which is only a few bucks more.
