Mi Box 3 (MDZ-16-AB) does not wake up from sleep

by borisst

My Mi Box does not wake up from sleep if left untouched for a few hours. I've contacted Xiaomi support and was told they plan to release a fix in the next month.

In the meantime, I've tried to downgrade to a previous safe version using these instructions , but after the last step of performing a factory reset and re-configuring, it just forcefully upgrades to the latest build.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edited: the problem seems to be resolved with build 2550. thanks for all the suggestions.

Have you tried pressing the power button on the remote, waiting 5 to 10 seconds and then pressing the button again?

I noticed that sometimes the power up doesn't work the first time I press the button, but always work the second time. Maybe the remote went into sleep or something and needs a few second to wake up and reconnect to the MiBox.

Mi Box 3 has had these issues on an off for a year, Xiaomi has done almost nothing to attempt to fix it. Best you can do right now is leave your device on all the time wasting like 5W of power.

I had to deal with similar problem last week on Oreo 2396. My problem was extremely sluggish performance after wake up, even after only 2 hours. Complete factory reset with everything removed/disabled except Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube didn't help. Developer options are of no use either.

Eventually I was able to downgrade to Oreo 2179. Now it runs smoothly after 100+ hours up time with daily sleep.

To avoid forced re-upgrade after downgrade to 2167, you need to block the domain name "android.googleapis.com" on your router along with the MAC address of your Mi Box. You should first setup your Google account in 2396 and install a file manager in Play Store, like X-plore, before blocking the domain and starting downgrade. After downgrade to 2167, don't do factory reset immediately (because you'll have to unblock that domain name to set up your Google account again). Just directly upgrade to 2179 with USB stick.

Because domain blocking will interfere with Play Store. You'll have to unblock it temporarily from time to time if Play Store is stuck at a spinning circle. To avoid forced upgrade again, I suggest you filling up the rest of free space with apps and other files and leaving only ~500MB free space before unblocking the domain name. That's why you should install a file manager before starting the whole downgrade process. So you can sideload apps and copy files from USB stick with WIFI turned off.

You need to wait until you take the new OTA update 2550 this update fixed all the previous bugs.

A solution (work for me) :

1- in Screen saver preference , choose screen "off" : (curiously the white led in front will be off too)

2 - choose a delay for screen saver (i ve choosen 5 min)

3- choose a long delay for device inactivity : i ve choosen 12 hours but "never" can be a choice for thoses with very few usage of the box

Whit these settings, the box will shut down after 5 min and will be on after pressing any buttons when you want.

For information, when box is idle or sleeping, the watts consumption is 0 (my wattmeter dont move)

and with HDMI on + an iptv the watts consumption is beetween 0-4 watts

Spam the back button until it wakes up. It was suggested by someone a few months ago in a similar post and, while not ideal, works for me.
