Plex Server on cheap Android TV box other than Shield?

by thnok

I came across the link to the app on play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb&hl=en_US

Just wondering if it can be installed or sideloaded on any Android tv box (even Mi Box or cheap off amazon) and other than the shield? This would be directly playing and not transcoding.

this Plex Server app work only with 64bit android os, Shield is only device with android 64 bit os.

try emby https://emby.media/server-android.html , or buy a NAS.

I haven't heard of anybody trying, so I have no idea. I probably wouldn't try it if you use 4K media, since the MiBox can sometimes struggle playing that with nothing else going on in the background.

If you're just looking for a cheap Plex server and don't need transcoding, you can try setting it up on a Raspberry Pi or using a Western Digital MyCloud .

I wouldn't rely on it. What are you attempting to do? I have a Mi Box 3 and from my experience using it, it doesn't have the horsepower required to handle Plex server. It's fine to play content through Plex, though. I have Plex media server on my desktop, though.

If you're looking to just build a digital library of content, You'd probably have a better experience putting the movies on a hard drive and connecting it via USB to your Android TV box and using a number of the video player apps. Just make sure the hard drive isn't formatted to NTFS or it probably won't read on the Android TV box.

If you have a PC, just set that up with the Plex Media Server instead and use the regular Plex app to play content. Or get a NAS or other dedicated hardware for Plex that's not a cheap ATV box.

It looks like it's in Aptoide. Haven't tried it though since I already have a shield.
