I believe there's a hacked version of the Netflix APK you can load on there; Google around for it. Kodi also has a working Netflix plugin now, that should get you in.
Just wanted to point out that you do have options other than buying another box.
Yes I found myself in the same position. Although I didn't try the Mi Box, I did want something with Canadian content. I looked far and wide most boxes sucked for one reason or another. I love my Shield TV box so was very disappointed when I couldn't find a less expensive version. I went over to a friends house and he had a FireStick 4K. I really liked it even though it wasn't Android TV. So I bought one for the upstairs tv, an old Sharp LED. Works awesome, I can sideload, so I installed TSN and Sportsnet (which is now an Amazon app). So that's what I did for the same problem as you. I still would have liked a new model Nexus box if they still made them. Nvidia should make a ATV Stick for all our other tvs.
I own a couple of Xiaomi Mi box since they came out and it's a great product for the price.
Xiaomi mi box is your other option.
Just an FYI - Fire OS is just a reskinned Android TV. Depending on your needs a fire stick might be a good option for you too. And it's generally more reliable than mi box which is a little buggy.

I believe the Widevine L1 DRM certificates the Mecool manufacturer Videostong is using on it's various named boxes also has had it's Widevine certification status revoked for use with Netflix due to widespread abuse.
CoreELEC Kodi Leia and the Kodi Leia Netflix Addon can at least restore 720p Netflix on such devices:
