Cast issue with the android TV

by navino87

Ours is a apartment type building with 3 families.. We all share same network with different wifi access points.. I recently got a new android tv which has built-in chromecast support.. The problem is my neighbours could cast video to my tv even though they are in a different WiFi AP in the same network.. I have a 3 year old kid who watches yt kids very often.. I'm worried if my neighbours would cast something inappropriate when my kid watches TV.. Any solution to stop my tv show up to my neighbours apart from disabling cast itself?!

Thanks

The Wifi AP doesn't matter, rather the underlying subnet that it is a part of. This happens in some college dorms, hotels, and apartment complexes that offer "included internet." Google has mentioned this is not a recommended environment for Chromecasts for good reason, and unfortunately you stated some of those reasons.

There's a few options to look into:

  1. Isolate your residence with your own wifi-enabled router or repeater that you can administer. Or, if your have proper admin access to the AP you use, you should be able to do some configuration changes. With proper configuration, you should be able to create a distinct private network and block outside devices from accessing the Chromecast. This is probably second best option, outside of #3 below.

  2. Talk to your landlord about configuring the network to where certain devices are 'assigned' to different rooms and/or with distinct private networks. Airgroup is one such solution in case multiple private networks aren't an option. Note this is going to incur some labor, equipment or software costs on the landlord's part. There is a reasonable chance they won't do it due to these costs.

  3. Purchase separate internet access for your unit. Usually that will include #1 above as the ISP usually offers a modem/router combo or will offer installation help to make a local network for your use. Many ISPs will have the means to separate each unit of a building for billing and maintenance purposes.

  4. Discuss the situation with other tenants of the building, so that they on good faith not use the chromecast without your consent. This is the cheapest solution I have listed, but along with #2 is least likely to be effective.

Hope this helps, and good luck.
