[Mi Box S] How good is the integrated Chromecast really in comparison with the real Chromecast Ultra?

by julius1504

I was wondering what exactly are the differences between the Chromecast Ultra and the built in Chromecast Ultra of the Xiaomi Mi Box S. Obviously, the Mi Box doesnt have an ethernet port, but this can be added via USB.

Is the built-in Chromecast driven by a dedicated CPU or does it run together with the AndroidTV system on the Cortex A53? Is there any difference in the behaviour/performance/streaming quality compared to an original Chromecast Ultra?

When you "cast" something you're really just sending an URL and MiBox opens it up with a player or an app. No need for "dedicated" hardware to do that.

MiBox can easily play 4k HDR content so as long as the network connection is sufficient it will be just as good as Chromecast Ultra.

Nobody knows Google doesn't document this.

The sleepb thing is the biggest con and its annoying and I'd preferred the Chromecast

I'm using it on my 1080p TV without any problems.

I haven't tried it with my 4K/HDR set up...

Why would you need a dedicated CPU? The Chromecast receiver app just replaces whatever was running on the box before as the current active app.

I have a Chromecast, MI Box and Shield. They all work fine, so really can't see a difference and my old Chromecast now is basically a legacy device.

Mine is pretty bad, the mi box chrome cast stutters like crazy . I’ve tried changing my mi box display settings from 4K to 1080p with the lowest refresh rates and it still stutters. Basically it’s useless and I just go back to my real chrome cast.

I find it really good. It's been working flawlessly ever since I got it...

My personal experience with a Nvidia shield so far and casting has not been great.

I have owned a chromecast ultra for years and it has always preformed pretty flawlessly.

I bought a shield within the last couple months and the casting is at best been partially functional. Netflix from a different account doesn't cast at all, and throws an error. This behavior is not correct. For awhile casting to everything was broken after the last update. I uninstalled all the Google cast updates on the shield and it looks like it fix it in the interim.

Reliability is key l, I can't replace my Chromecast ultra if it isn't.

Integrated Chromecast in my 2016 Mi Box is not always-on like a real Chromecast does so I never use it. Granted this is not Mi Box S but I think it behaves the same.

With my Chromecast 2 I can just cast to it even with the TV off and it will turn on and switch to HDMI input automatically. The Mi Box just disappears from the "cast-able list" when it's off so it's useless. Video performance/quality is the same though, so there's that.

It that same tbh mi box has more hands on features

Hoping since it’s has Chromecast ultra built in it can be use for stadia
