G20 Remote is great! (After one modification)

by ExtremeHobo

I bought the G20 remote from Amazon based on this post .

At first it was working only when VERY close to my Nvidia Shield, like 4 feet. However, I had a small extender USB cable and plugged the dongle into that and the remote is working flawlessly now.

Pros:

  • Has a learnable IR power button.
  • No weird sleep issues like my normal Shield remote.
  • More responsive than OG remote.

Cons:

  • If using the dongle you can't learn anything but the power IR.
  • Mic isn't quite as good as the OG one.

Being able to turn on my sound bar with one remote has been a game changer for my clutter. I just turned up the sound bar and am using the Shield volume control.

I agree. Also just bought one and love it. Wish I could remap volume buttons but still.

Same. Bought the remote based of that exact post. LOVE it. Definitely recommend

I also bought one. How do i setup the IR power button? It didn't come with a guide.

Also, my remote makes a slight buzzing sound. Do you also notice this? Its not too loud and only noticeable if i bring it close to my ear.

Awesome, that was my post - glad it was helpful.

Who knows why it took so long for anyone to get the design right when it seems so obvious!

I bought the remote as well after that post. It's an upgrade over both the controller and the remote because both became frustratingly unresponsive for me. Even the mic in the remote didn't really work 23 dollars Canadian well spent.

I'm waiting for mine after ordering because of that same post!

Can you clarify what you mean by "If using the dongle you can't learn anything but the power IR"?

Do you mean that if not using a USB dongle you can map other buttons to IR codes? I'd really like to buy this remote but require one that can learn IR volume controls as well since CEC volume control doesn't work with my TV.

Just an audiophile note - this will cause audible hum/hiss, especially in real a full receiver/speakers setup. You ALWAYS turn the digital source all the way up and control the analog volume as needed. If going with this backwards setup, at least make sure you have thick and short speaker wires away from any power cables.
