Xiaomi Mi Box S SDR to HDR

by jcthrower

Question, has anyone used the SDR to HDR mode in display settings extensively? I had a couple questions about it.

-Will this harm the TV to leave on all the time? (since there is probably an increase in brightness and light output leading to early LED backlight burnout?)

-How does this affect true HDR signals? When a true HDR signal is sent does it override it using some upconverted HDR algorithm, or does it default back to true HDR from the signal?

It's a fake conversation to HDR

It's not fake conversation like on many 4K TVs. On Samsung TVs they called HDR+ and it's a fake and ugly filter.

On Mi box SDR to HDR: If your TV supports HDR it enables Tv's native HDR mode to be always on like on Apple TV connected to HDR TVs.

Android TV OS is on SDR and changes only to HDR every time a video is HDR. I have SDR to HDR enabled on my TV. Very good job from Xiaomi. Videos look bright colourful and more true to life. UI will look on some cheap TVs less colourful adjust your colour settings and give it a try playing videos from Netflix and YouTube. On non HDR TVs it doesn't do anything.

Apple worked from scratch the UI elements like icons, banners, buttons etc to be HDR and 4K compatibled so the new set owners of 4KHDR sets enable that option Apple tvOS don't look washed out and blurry. Now it's Google's turn to support 4K HDR UI natively.
