Xiaomi Mi Box S - Any alternative Compatible Remote?

by war_pig

Hello!

Since Xiaomi Mi Box S does not have an IR - does any one know any fully compatible 3rd party remote control with number pads that will work with the Xiaomi Mi Box S? I don't even know what remote control protocol its using right now with the default remote -- is it RF, bluetooth?

I don't really mind if there are no dedicated google voice or live channels button since I'll be using the remote with the HDHomerun App + number pad to mimic a regular tv (wife and grandma/granda requirements! lol)

I have a Samsung Frame TV, and I tried to use a regular samsung remote control (with numberpad) with anynet+ HDMI-CEC which kind of works. The problem is when using the HDHomerun App, you can type the number but they Android keyboard shows up -- and I hit the "enter key" to actually change the channel. I have to use the Xiami MiBox S remote to hit the enter/return key.

I also have FLIRC and tried it but its acting weird too with HDMI-CEC -- its like overlapping with the TV. I'm still figure this part out but I was just thinking maybe there are ready-made remote control that doesn't let me go to these hoops.

Why not buy a Harmony Smart Control, they are usually at 50 or so USD but they will last you a good time.

Harmony hub. I have one setup for my dad. He's 75 and it works great.

He hits the power on button and it turns on his TV (IR), turns on the MiBox, Navigates to Kodi, Kodi has an autoexec that tunes to his favorite channel (GRIT).

Up down for volume and channel works great.

When he hits the power off button I have the activity set to exit Kodi and put the MiBox to sleep.

This is the most simple example but you should be able to do everything with the harmony hub remote. Since it's Kodi you can add a Kodi media center to the remote and send any Kodi specific commands including numbers.

DO NOT even contemplate this. You are frankly wasting your time because the Mi Boxes with AMLogic Chipset have really lousy deinterlacing when using the HDHome Run App, or even Kodi for that matter.

There was a recent post on the Kodi forums that detailed the problems with interlaced Broadcast TV viewing on the Mi Box: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=275083&pid=2845009#pid2845009

It does not matter what App you use, it's all rubbish picture output quality vs what you would get if deinterlacing worked properly.

You need to buy a NVIDIA Shield if you are going to use the HDHomerun App or try and watch Interlaced TV in high quality without stuttering, on an Android TV platform
