Mi Box 3 vs Mi Box S

by SNEKII3

I had a Mi Box 3 for some time now and was never abled to watch netflix because of the HDCP issue.

Now my Mi Box 3 broke down and I get a Mi Box S in return and was wondering if this version fixes the problem.

I had hopes because Linus said in his Mi Box S video ''netflix actually works'' even though he was referring to off brand AndroidTV boxes that don't work with netflix.

Hope you can answer this question for me :)

I never had that problem on my MiBox 3, so I don't know. What I do know is that Linus is a dumbass when it comes to over-the-top/set-top-boxes, and I wouldn't listen to him about that topic. Or most topics, really.

THEVAN3D

I have Mi Box S and it has no problems with Netflix. Streams up to 4K with HDR and without any problems at all.

I have 4 x MiBox 3s and one has the HDCP. I put it in my sons room and he watches only Plex. (I tried everything from different cables, different TV, different input, factory reset, etc and I just think there were some units from factory that have an issue with HDCP.)

It was not all 3s by any means so don’t just assume all 3s had this HDCP issue.

For the price, the Mi Box 3 or S is a solid Android TV box.

Most likely the issue with HDCP is with your HDMI cable. People are quick to blame the Mi Box on all issues because of other posts on here and frankly some people are too lazy to troubleshoot. But most likely it's the cable you are using. Buy a new cable and try it out. Or use a different HDMI port on your TV. Or use another TV because it could be your TV isn't talking to the Mi Box correctly.

You have to troubleshoot instead of just assume it's the box.

There are 3 distinct requirements to get HD Netflix streaming with MDZ16ab or MDZ22ab....

1 - proper level of Netflix subscription

2- suitable internet bandwidth to support Netflix streams

3- appropriate DRM security from end-to-end that satisfies Netflix requirements. Most critically this involves the end uses' connected screen.

There are thousands of tvs, monitors and projectors that fail to provide proper DRM suitable to Netflix's clearly stated requirements. Check original factory specs of your TV for positive mention of HDCP 1.X or DRM. Do not assume any TV has proper DRM specs. Random tests show well over 50% of devices currently in use fail this major requirement.

Proven instances of HDMI/DRM quality issues attributable to faulty MiBox hardware are extremely rare compared to the overwhelming preponderance of output devices with flakey DRM.
