It appears Google has abandoned Google Assistant Device functionality on the Shield (and Android TV?)

by Waggmans

As people know, when for almost 2mos now, when trying to control an Android TV device with any other Google Assistant device like a mini or a home hub, it wouldn't work. When I tried to play a song on Spotify on my Shield I'd get a message like "There is a problem right now, please try again later".

For the hell of it I tried it again today. Now I get the message, "Actually, the Shield TV doesn't support that functionality".

It doesn't? It worked fine before. Even Nvidia and Google promote that functionality as a selling point on how any Assistant device (including Android TV) can be controlled by any other. The whole Google Assistant infrastructure is based upon this functionality.

So, Google, have you officially given up on us? I invested hundreds of dollars into your devices and have multiple Android TV devices. If it doesn't do what you claim, what's the point of me having all these Google Assistant and Android TV devices?

Google Assistant and my SHIELD work fine together as of the yesterday. I'm able to play, pause and stop shows and have play music without issue.

I works fine for me on my Sony Bravia Android TV with both my Google Home and Assistant on my phone

They haven't abandoned it I think. There was a security issue I think that caused the temporary block of features. My Sony tv stopped doing audio level commands the same time a security issue with Android was found... So I assume they are related

It's to do with this Google Photos on Android TV bug, they've disabled casting to assistant while they fix it https://9to5google.com/2019/03/04/android-tv-google-photos-bug/

My shield never gets my voice input right. It's just never worked for me. I'm switching to a fire remote to see if I just have a cruddy remote.
