I use MX Player Pro with the HW+ codec primarily. There's a codec pack for it but, I haven't had a need for it so I don't know much about it.
Serious question why use MX over VLC?
That XDA downloads page shows all the codecs as last updated in March 2018!!
Whereas the following link has codecs last updated in December 2018:

So why would you use the codecs from XDA if they are over a year old?
I just use the original custom codec pack from xda so that I can play audio formats that aren't supported by default (for legal reasons). You can download the AIO pack if your not sure which architecture you need.
You will occasionally need to manually update the pack as the app is updated.
