Question about apps purchased on an Android phone

by jpablomsan

If I buy an app on my Android phone (Pixel 3) that is also available in Android TV, can I download the app for free in my TV? (Sony Bravia).

Purchases are linked to your Google account, so they're available across devices. That being said, if the Android TV is using a different (ATV-specific) version of the app, you may not have paid for it.

Yes, in general. Android and Android TV share the same Play Store library.

There is the odd developer who makes two separate apps, one for Android and one for Android TV but that's rare.

The only issue I personally ran into: when Solid Explorer was made Android TV compatible, its old, deprecated unlocker app was not. Sideloading would have likely worked but I simply repurchased via IAP.

Some apps may download different versions for phone & TV, but they all share the same app id, like Crunchyroll ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crunchyroll.crunchyroid ). If you own one version, you also own all other versions in such case.

Other apps may use one app id for phone version, and another app id for TV version. In this case, they are considered different apps, like FunimationNow.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Funimation.FunimationNow

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Funimation.FunimationNow.androidtv

This also applies to paid apps/games.

I'm assuming you mean a paid app in the Google Playstore.

Yes, if you login to both devices with the same Google ID. But I haven't seen too many paid apps available in the Android TV part of the Playstore.

If the app is available, you should be able to install it without paying again.

I cannot download apps eg Chrome from my google account on my phone to my Sony Bravia tv because the tv option is greyed out on the options! 😡
