Android TV's ascent: 5,000 apps and counting

App discovery is terrible. Glad to see they are working on a redesign of the Play store on Android TV.

Still missing the #1 TV app in the UK (iPlayer) other than on proprietary platforms.

I love my shield but it is annoying how long it takes for some apps to update with some not even updating in years while other platforms like PS4 gets it (Crunchy Roll) on PS4 is so much better, I really like the Roku version of Plex too.

UPDATE HULU

4980 are shit though.

And if you install more than five of them your TV slows to a crawl!

I'd use my Shield if the hulu app wasn't hot garbage. I mean it doesn't even have user profiles, let alone live TV.

5000 apps are nice and good.

Then there are apps like the WRC APP, which is a totally mess, buggy, unstable and actually no longer usable since it crashes in so many situations.Last update for the ATV version: Early 2016. Release: Late 2015. While the mobile version has so to say monthly updates. (But still doesn't work in landscape on tablets, but that's another topic)

I'll believe it when I see it. The only reason I got the ShieldTV is for the dedicated Plex server. Or I would have got an Apple TV. Hell, I might just put the shield and external hard drive on my desk and operate it as a stand alone Plex server and get a Apple TV. Because Android TV is hot garbage compared to the competition.

No F1tv, no DirecTV Now. My top two paid services aren't available yet. I wouldn't call it that great.

Missing a normal Netflix compatible with streaming from an account that is not already logged in with the same account. Built-in Chromecast should work as normal Chromecast.

allanfarrell

new devices does not always mean new consumer devices, they left that part out.

hyattpotter

I can't get prime video on my android tv :(

Tired8281

5000 apps in nearly 5 years is sad. It only took 20 months for Windows Phone to get 100,000 apps.

akisnet

The Verge and US tech site don't even mention as an option. Go Android TV. I hope the gears will start to spin on Wear OS too.

Seeda_Boo

And the YouTube Android TV app will no doubt remain an utter piece of shit.

5000 apps and counting (backwards)

I wonder if the Sponsored bar containing crap was part of Google's "getting serious" about Android TV. If it is, can we expect MORE ads for apps and content shoved in our faces?

I'm glad to hear they are working on the Play Store. It badly needs it, but the article only mentions video preview, which sound like more of an annoyance than a feature. I don't want to watch a commercial for an app, and I definitely don't want it to auto-play when I highlight the app (ala Netflix auto-play). I don't need cinematic commercials -- i need easy browsing and discovery WHEN I'm in a discovery mood.

All I want is a better browse and search system, and a better layout of the details page. Hey, they could allow rating.. that would be nice. As a developer for Android TV, I get almost no rating from ATV users, because they have to go to their phone to rate. Even worse, my app isn't shown at all when browsing the play store, one must the search function to find it.
