AndroidTV Device with full CEC?

by treefiddylq

Do any AndroidTV devices support full CEC where I can use my TV Remote to control the AndroidTV device? Every search I’ve done people are talking about using their AndroidTV remote to turn the TV on, but none that talk about using the TV’s remote to control the device. As a comparison or example, I have Kodi running through a Raspberry Pi and I can use my TV remote to surf through the different options and select the movies and TV shows I want to watch.

I have a 4K FireTV Stick and it can turn my TV on with the fire remote, but I still have to go grab my TV remote if I want to swap inputs to another device, or activate the sleep timer.

Basically I want to eliminate clutter if possible. Do any of the more expensive devices do what I’m asking about here?

Works on my Shield - I use either my shield remote or my Sony TV remote to control it and my receiver.

Shield/bravia here, I don't use anything but the bravia remote unless I'm going to be playing games or doing a lot of typing.

I have a MiBox and it can be turned on (from sleep!) by choosing the correct HDMI input from my tv remote. After that I can navigate the Android TV interface with the TV remote via CEC. However, I had to turn that on in the MiBox settings. I assume the FireTV Stick should also have a section dedicated to HDMI CEC in it's settings.

Works on my ShieldTV, I can use my sound bar remote or TV remote and both control inputs etc.

My son uses the samsung tv remote, to use on the shield works fine.

I have mibox 3 and shield. Both respond to the tv remotes. Way laggier than their native remote but still functional

I have the MiBox S and it supports full CEC. I can use my TV Remote to remote the device completely, turn on/off too. Even the color buttons on the TV Remote are supported in some unofficial apps like amazon prime video (apk extracted from Sony TVs).

Only for Google Assistant (Voice command) I still have to use the MiBox remote, because my TV's remote has no mic build in.

Xiaomi Mi Box 3S + Vestel STV works. When turn off the tv, the box stands by itself and reverse

The RPi running LibreELEC uses the open soured LibCEC code to talk to other HDMI connected devices and subsequently that has had a lot of tweaks added to it.

As such you have a LOT more control over HDMI CEC configurability. You are not going to find that on other media players.

You only need to browse the NVIDIA Shield forums to see the problems various TV and audio receiver users are having with CEC.

What I’m saying is you can not rely on HDMI CEC control, regardless of what all the Android TV users in this Sub Reddit say. There simply are far to many users with different combos of HDMI CEC connected equipment.

My Mi Box for example when connected jams up HDMI CEC control for other HDMI CEC connected devices.

CEC is not a reliable protocol. It is not as good as LibreELEC and CEC control you have with your RPi.
