Should I really go for the Nvidia Shield TV and not the Mi Box S?

by monchee3

Hi! I just moved out for the first time (Australia) and I got me a Hisense 55P7. I'm looking to get me an AndroidTV box.

I've been seeing the two, Nvidia Shield TV and Xiaomi Mi Box S being suggested a lot. I'm no AV nerd but I want to get the best experience I can as much as possible.

Currently, I noticed that the Nvidia Shield TV from local retailers are all out of stock or either selling it at 329 AUD (230 USD). Is it worth it at that price?

Alternatively, I'm able to get me a Mi Box S, but I have been reading that streaming 4k is laggy. Is this still true for the current state of the device?

Thanks!

Imho the shield is worth the price that said the mibox s is worth its price. Most of the complaints I see on the mibox s are people who expect it to be a shield at less than a third the price.

Mibox seems to be a mixed bag. There are many that have no issues whatsoever. But, there appear to be a large number of users with significant issues.

(I don't have a Mibox myself but do mod the dedicated Mibox sub, which makes me think I may have a negatively skewed bias.)

Shield...no contest.

Yes.

I recently had this question and not like the others I bought all 3 (mibox, jetstream, and the shield) .. and compared them at the same time, same tv etc.

Shield Wins no contest. The interlace/deinterlacing issue i had both on the jetstream and mibox with Live TV is really bad.

I got both the Nvidia shield and the Mibox S. They both play 4K Content without any issues for me. Aslong as u have a good internet speed, both the shield and the Mibox S should stream 4K Content without any issues

Someone was telling me Kodi streams are faster on Shield? Is that true? Can someone verify?

I've had a Mi Box S for almost a month. Also in Australia.

Has worked fine for us, although we don't have 4k - still on ADSL2+ and only have 16mbit down.

Looks better than or old (2015) android box (Tronsmart Orion R68 using some third party firmware).

ABC iView, SBS OnDemand, 7Plus and 10 Play have specific Android TV versions. For channel 9 and Optus Sport you need to use Kodi plugins.

check to see what version of android they run

Love my shield.

I have a similar Dilema . I want to get MI box s but it's running outdated hardware and doesn't have much storage. As well as not having full Dolby sound support. On the other hand shield sounds good but I think they will bring out a new one just as I get it, plus the remote isn't to flash.

I would get the new beelink gt king but it doesn't support Netflix .

Mecool km9 seems like a good option. 905x2 , 4gb ddr4 ram, more storage, android TV 9.0

I have a Mi Box S, I stream 2160p from the second floor of my house with zero issues. Netflix works great, and Chromecast is awesome (finally supported on a chinese box). I don't see a point of getting a shield unless you want to game. You can buy several of these and put them in all of your rooms. Buy it from AliExpress, can get it for $60 usd shipped.

I had a MiBox initially and while it worked it wasn't great. I then got the Shield and realized how shitty the MiBox actually was. I keep the MiBox in the living room where I watch TV on occasion and I can't really watch 4K without it being choppy, it doesn't wake from sleep and I need to unplug and plug it back in to use it.

The Shield just works. It plays anything and everything. No complaints. Worth every penny.

MiBox is finicky and isn't the best but works decently.

You can get shield for less $330 AUS online.

If Android TV is not a specific requirement....

Seriously get the Apple TV 4K. Best Firmware support you are going to get, most powerful media player on the market and Best picture quality as well.

ATV 4K gets A LOT better local Apps support for Apple's tvOS in Australia vs anything Android TV OS.

This post will be downvoted, but it's a irrefutable fact.

I have both devices.
