Android TV wish list: What we want to see from Google's TV platform in 2019 - CordCutters

Of those items discussed in the article , I'd especially appreciate (1) an expanded remote control app, (2) a Universal Remote designed to work with any Android TV device, and (3) a several apps (including Prime and modern Hulu) to fill a few remaining app gaps.

But what I really want is something like an "Android One" program that would, at the very least, guarantee timely security patch updates. (The security patch level on my Android TV is stuck at August 5, 2018.)

Audio support for Android remote. I'm not sure if it's a thing but it would be great to listen to the TV through your phones wired headphones. Sorta like a Roku remote.

I would like to see the updated leanback launcher be released for older devices. My 2015 Sony Bravia will never get a newer version of Android TV and now it looks dated compared to my other Android TV boxes in my house.

I would settle for better integration with 3rd-party automation tools. Google Assistant works great for controlling the Android TVs, but the other way around things don't work all that smoothly. I.e. triggering automation tasks depending on the various states of Android TV.

For example, I recently bought a couple of smart LED bulbs and wanted to turn them off or on whenever I play or pause/stop media on my Nvidia Shield TV. There's no native way to do this; I had to set up Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi, have it monitor the Shield, and trigger the lights based on the state of the player. This didn't have to be so complicated, if only Google would realize that they are not the center of the Living Room, but just another component that needs to talk to other components.

  • Some standard buttons for remotes (a "TV" button for entering the TV/Live Channels app, some "Coloured app buttons" that you could configure to launch any app you want, volume up/down and channel up/down buttons)
  • A fix for the launcher so the Home button press ALWAYS takes you to the first app of your app row, currently if you are on the left column (the one there the icons for Apps, watch later and so on are located it won't take you back to the first app of your apps row, this is a NIGHTMARE for my elder parents)
  • More Android TV boxes with coaxial inputs (for ATSC/DVB and previous standards)
  • For television sets: A row below the Apps row where you have a fixed list of the inputs of the device (TV channels, HDMI 1, 2, 3, etc.), exactly what Sony had in Android TV 6 and 7

I want small stuff like:

  • Wallpaper/Background
  • Clock in the app drawer
  • Official Google TV Apps: Chrome browser, Gmail, Keep, ...
  • Ability to use PiP in more video apps
Superspudmonkey

I would like an app that will show all my subscribed to channels (Netflix, Prime, etc) so I can search for a movie or show in one place.

My dream feature is being able to the sync the audio track from videos with a Chromecast Audio group. All they would need to do is have a cast button in the playback controls which allows you to select a device to sync your audio playback with.

More pass-through devices with HDMI IN . I think there may be one device that does this?

XBox/Cable -> AndroidTV Box (or speaker bar!) -> TV

Ask Google to turn on all three. Ask it to switch to Xbox/Cable/etc. While watching TV or playing games, ask Google things over the TV and have the answers appear on the screen over Xbox interface, etc.

Of course, some of this would rely on better third-party integration as well, but a lot of that is in the works. HDMI pass-through doesn't get enough attention.

Entry level hero device could be MeCool KM9 Pro for example. Will only see more Google certified boxes with the new Amlogic S922X chip coming very soon.

misterflo

Additional compatibility for the ISDB-T standard and more compatible dongles.

I have one right now but it took me a lot of workarounds to make it work and the dongle overheats when decoding HD channels.

Nathandlr

Channel icons for live channels on the launcher home like Netflix with shows. So clicking your preferred channel takes you directly to that channel.

jahb0i

Mandatory refresh rate switching/color space switching from all video apps.
Better deinterlacing or ability to passthrough interlaced signal to TV.
Mandatory dd+ conversion to dd.
Mandatory hdr10, dv, hlg, hdr10+ certification.
Mandatory Atmos/Dts-X certification.

JonCofee

The ability to change channels on my HDHomeRun Prime by directly entering the channel number on the remote. At the moment this is impossible because the 'Enter' button on the keyboard does not correspond to anything on any remote control. It is the Enter button that tells the HDHomeRun app that I'm finished entering the channel number. Right now I have to scroll through channels and that is a pain with hundreds of channels.

Not Google's fault, but I wish some devs would stop dragging their feet and make ATV versions of their apps already

Can we have an actual competitor to the shield? Why are they wanting more entry level devices? We already have a couple of those at 50 dollars. I want someone to put the 855 in a box that uses q sync.

phrostbyt

SACD/DSD support

AlphaRomeo15

Codes for AndroidTV so that we could use any remote that we want.

TheRealSilverBlade

How about a real SMB server without a limitations on the amount of hard drives it can see at a time?

I want to be able to watch my own collection of stuff (spanned over 8 hard drives) without switching. AND I want to be able to transfer shows/movies over the network onto external hard drives connected to the Shield TV.

elister

Be able to record TV Shows to a Network Drive (no DRM plz).

psychopape

Netflix by default. And avoid app available on play store but incompatible with the tv or box device.
