what are my options to filter garbage pseudo science and fake news content from my grandparents android tv youtube app?

by fernandotl

grandparents were always left aside when the family discussed about tv shows or viral videos, so they got a xiaomi mibox a few months ago, i personally recommended it cause of the voice search function and easy to use interface

i tought they were going to be using netflix to catch on tv dramas and youtube to check news and cooking tutorials and stuff, but they instantly gravitated towards awful and alarming new age garbage

at first i thought we should treated them as adults and let them decide what they want to watch, but its time to face the truth, they are getting senile and have trouble recognizing real documentaries from any pathetic badly edited video about flat earth, climate change denial or reptilians pouring mind control gases over the crops

and im afraid its getting dangerous, in the past they have been vulnerable to serious telephone frauds, and being ripped off by fortune tellers and such, and now they are getting kinda paranoid over the illuminatti and any number of other stupid stuff, they actually lose sleep over this BS

they are now starting to refuse taking their medicines to instead buy homeopathy, stopped eating certain produce cause "it has microchips in them" and a lot of other stuff that makes looking after them really hard

i know just censoring their tv box wont be the answer, they need attention and guidance, being treated and explained respectfully, they are not dumb, they superated their iliteracy to raise and get their sons to college, but they unfortunatelly are very gullible, so while we consult with a geriatric and or psychologist, we need to stop the stream of garbage that its being beamed to their TV

seriously, in this country the stuff thats on youtube its like "infowars" combined with buzzfeed, jhon edward and jerry sprinfield all at once. so other than cleaning their search history and subscribing them to good content, what can i do to filter their TV?

Open the logged account in a pc browser, then when you found a video mark it as 'I don't want to see this video' then click the option why you don't want to see the video and select the option of you don't have interest of such videos.

Go to Android TV settings > apps > YouTube then uninstall. Seriously. I know that you think you're being a dutiful grandson by keeping dangers away, but all you'd be doing is prompting them to actively seek out the content that they want. Not to mention the YouTube rabbit hole and the fact that it's very real. Grandma looks up a recipe on YouTube, 5 related videos later she's watching Alex Jones and turning grandpa onto it.

Wall garden them into Hulu or Netflix or prime. There is no 100% effective way to filter out the evils on YouTube. As evidenced by the children's channels that were all taken down for hosting dangerous content.

Change the account YouTube is logged into as well

That will help clean out the suggested videos at least

In the youtube app, I believe there is an option called "restricted mode" that restricts adult content and such (I know it's not the same thing that you are asking but hopefully those videos fall in the same category).

Go to Settings > General > Restricted Mode

What about the YouTube Kids app? It has more parental controls.

Common sense.

Man, if this isn't the perfect representation of our society at the moment.

"Let's limit what adults can do because they are too dumb(senile) to think for themselves, and must be coddled and they should only have access to shit that I approve of. Freedom is oppression"

Give me a break. Leave them alone.
