It's been tried before along with installing Amazon services which some FireTV apps require but AFAIK nobody has ever had it working with Hulu.
Yea unfortunately there is no good Hulu app for Android tv. Best alternative would be to sideload android version of hulu

Yes, you can, but it still may not work on the Shield.

It’s been tried multiple times before without success.
I believe the app looks at the device capabilities (build.prop) and fails to start when it identifies a non-Amazon device. Though I haven’t tried to modify build.prop to identify as an Amazon Fire TV to confirm, since I prefer to keep my ATV on factory firmware without root.
