Google Assistant stopped being able to turn on and off my shield TV

by ZainAjam

Over the last few weeks my Google Assistant devices (except for Google Assistant directly on the TV) has stopped being able to turn off and on my shield TV box. The response I get is a positive one "you got it. Turning off the master bedroom TV", but nothing actually happens. I have 2 other shield TV boxes in my house and it works with the other 2. Any ideas?

Update 1 ... To clarify, the problem is not with the connection and communication between the Shield TV and the TV itself. The problem is that Google Assistant cannot turn the shield device on or off, even if the shield TV isn't connected to a TV at all.

Update 2 ... Problem identified. With Google app 3.9, it works fine. With the update to Google app 3.10 which started rolling out on 8 May, the ability to turn the TV on and off through Google Assistant is broken

Update 3 ... Recent Google app update on Android TV fixed it

It stopped for me as well on my Shield TV. I was able to turn it on up until I think about May 20th. Since then, I've experienced the same issues as you.

Mine too!

I thought it wasn't ever supposed to work and just left it at that. I managed to make "Turn on the TV" turn on my AV receiver and projector via HDMI CEC, but the TV box stays unfazed every time. So my only idea is maybe check HDMI CEC settings on the TV box? The settings can reset seemingly randomly. But AFAIK the Assistant doesn't use HDMI CEC to control your TV box, so that's probably useless suggestion.

I have routines set up to turn my shield TV on in the morning and turn it off in the evening, and it stopped working a week or two ago

Same problem as well. I was able to turn on/off my TV but it doens't work anymore.

There was a Google app for Android TV update recently that i manually pushed a few day ago (the one from May 8th) and also a Chromecast build-in update, i suspect one of them is the cause of the problem because the CEC command turn on/off stop working since then.

Edit : I meant the Google Assistant command linked to the CEC turn on/off

Had the same problem and now when I was looking at my Google home devices, I couldn't find shield in it. Can op confirm whether you are able to see the device?

Currently I am at work and will try to add the device once I go home.

On my Bravia, I uninstall the updates to the Google app, then delete it from my Home app. Then set everything up again.

Mine works but it doesn't show the status change in the app UI for whatever reason ¯_(ツ)_/¯

When I say switch on/off shield it works. If I say turn on or off it says it's not supported.

Sometimes physically unplugging the television set from the wall somehow resets my CEC and everything starts working again. Give it a shot.

I can't even reconnect it back on the Google Assistant after I accidentally removed it.

Same issue here... I think this one is on Google

I've found a workaround until Google fixes it. On the Shield go to Settings/Apps/Google and uninstall updates. It will roll the app back to version 3.5 then reboot and Google assistant will once again be able to turn the Shield on and off via voice commands.

While a minor annoyance for me, it is compounded when by the WAF (Wife acceptance factor) so hopefully google fixes this soon. A previous update some months ago broke it and it took them a while to fix it. Hopefully it won't take as long this time.

The "update" didn't work for mine. I uninstalled updates to Chromecast bulit in and google in the play store. Restart shield and refresh Google home app on phone. Then in the Google home app if shield shows up hit play music. Your shield should play music THEN add to home. I can now turn TV off with Google assistant again.
