Mediatek processors found in latest Sony TVs are more powerful than 99% of certified Android TV boxes.

So yes, check the Geekbench results for the UR1 and UR2 Sony Bravia Televisions (Mediatek MT5893):

Except the Nvidia X1, no other processor, currently in any certified Android TV device, from Broadcom, Realtek, Synaptics, Amlogic, Hisilicon or Mstar can reach 3000 in Multi-Core Score.

I thought that was interesting, knowing how sluggish previous Mediatek SoC were before.

It also seems like Mediatek is preparing an MT5895.

The Amlogic S922X is more powerful but isn't Android TV-certified yet.

Good, this was absolutely necessary.

Previously the Shield TV was the only adequately powered device for frequent and smooth 4K usage.

The Mi Box, Jetstream, and older Sony TVs were all underpowered if you actually intended to watch a lot of 4K content.

Even things like navigating through menus was visibly slower on those other devices than the Shield.

I'm glad that someone (other than Nvidia) is finally running Android TV on something other than the Amlogic S905X.

Contrary to popular belief Mediatek makes some incredibly powerful SoC. But they also make cheap, just good enough for the application SoC. And that’s what we know.

Rather annoying that I have a 2018 TV so I'm one generation early :/ .. these TVs get the same updates so I'm worried eventually they won't care about my tv and updates will be tailored doe the better hardware and I'll get fucked

Did Sony fix their audio api to use android's api for multi channel audio? On my 2015 Bravia the only app able to play anything other than AC3 is the built in video player, which sucks for things like Plex.

I have recently purchased a Sony X950G which has the UR2 tier processor and its quick. Feels like im using my ShieldTV attached to the TV but without it actually taking up an HDMI port. Everything has been great aside from the stupid "Suggestions" ad they shovel, but otherwise ive been happy.

Good i guess, but anyone i know typically dont upgrade their tv for 10 years, so an external smatt box is still necessary if they want to keep up with updates and features

this is surprising that mediatek is fast now. they were always a budget low power, low performance cpu.

How tf are these processors STILL getting beat by the X1 processor, a 2014-2015-era processor.

Except for the xe90 model. Awesome display but too much lag in all of navigation.

SOUTHAUSTRALIAN4SKIN

Its too bad that they brick it after 3yrs of use.

The SOC (whatever it is) on my 2 year old Sammy plays 4k like a breeze. Too bad your stuck with crappy audio currently when you use it.

At least you'll get the ads faster than everyone else using Android tv who don't get them at all. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/04/google-pilot-program-puts-a-row-of-ads-on-the-android-tv-home-screen/

Mediatek chips are garbage...
