Review of the T1M / T1 Remote

by makhay

As I am still on my search for a good replacement remote for for the NVIDIA Shield (and my TV), here is a review of the T1M or T1. It is sold mostly by TikiGoGo but you can also find it by a few other brands. The T1 remote is a pretty great replacement remote for the Nvidia Shield, especially for $10. It connects via a usb dongle you connect to your shield, it takes two AAA batteries. It replaces ALL functionality of the Shield remote and improves upon it in some areas. Every button besides the TV button can also be programmed for IR functionality. It comes in all black or "colors" - i got the all black version.

Pros:

  • Power Button
  • Mic works flawlessly, for assistant and in apps.
  • Familiar form factor - similar to fire tv remote.
  • Volume buttons and mute.
  • Air mouse is sort of cool.
  • There is a TV toggle and which allows you to teach every button a new IR function. Also when you toggle to tv mode - the light on the remote becomes a solid red - so you definitely know what mode you are in.
  • IR learning function is super easy - you can teach all the keys in one go.

Cons

  • No back light.
  • Volume buttons are weirdly placed.
  • DPAD Center button is routed to "Enter" instead of "DPAD center" - this causes an issue with the android tv keyboard (my solution: IR program my TV dpad center, use CEC - in IR mode, it works just fine.)
  • Very few options to purchase in the states - got mine off of aliexpress. (found the color version on amazon from an obscure seller)
  • The buttons are tactile, but feel a little cheap.
  • I feel like the TV and the Mute buttons should have been switched.

This is an almost no compromises replacement for the stock shield remote. I am pretty impressed. Now I just need a remote like this with number keys (which I have on order) - will keep you updated.

Do I understand you correctly, You have to switch between regular commands and IR commands?

The shield remote is capable of sending IR-codes simultane to the shield commands. I am in need of this function.

Gotta figure out how to program this thing and get the mic to work. Pulls up assistant fine but hears nothing

I setup my Alexa Voice Remote today with my Shield TV and have no idea why I didn’t try it earlier. Absolutely flawless and a huge step up from the original remote.

I don’t use voice search or anything like that, but even if I did all I have to do is keep my Shield Game Controller inside my end table drawer and it’ll pick up my voice just fine from inside there. Just have to press the button on the Alexa remote.
