A Shield with gamestream is like owning a top end gaming PC along with a powerful 4k media player. I don't know what kind of gaming you're after, but if you want to play AAA PC titles without the huge investment, the shield is your only choice and easily worth $100 premium. Right now gamestream is free, but the idea is you buy games and run them on Nvidia's computers that stream to your shield. It's quite seamless in my dabbling with it. You do need decent low latency internet. If you're after emulation at most you basically want a mi box and a gaming controller.
MiBox is the only inexpensive Android box I would recommend.
I own Roku, Fire TV, Nvidia Shield TV, MiBox, Chromecast, and several cheap Android boxes from China. I can tell you from experience that most of the Chinese boxes are garbage. Usually the interface is semi-broken, the processors are underpowered, and they don't have enough storage. On top of that, they frequently have some version of KODI installed, and may earn you a letter from your ISP. I'm not a KODI user, but after plugging one of those into my home network (without a VPN) I got a warning letter from my ISP about Piracy (Spectrum/TWC). It's the only thing I did that could have gotten my that warning. I'm almost 50 and get everything legitimately at this stage in my life.
If you want to roll the dice on one of those, buy it from DHGate, BangGood, or AliExpress. Any of the domestic sellers will overcharge by a lot.
Tbh try to find a used / refurbished Nvidia shield tv. Watch eBay, slickdeals and Craigslist for a week and I'm sure a few will come up.
On a budget, and if you do NOT need official Netflix, then checkout this new MECOOL KM3 - Google Certified Android TV OS device:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSHp_EUdnhw&feature=youtu.be
It will be faster, due to it's more powerful chipset vs the cheap Android TV devices like the Mi Boxes.
It's also running the new Android TV OS Pie 9.0 - which is further optimised vs any other Android TV device on the market.
I personally love the MiBox, it can handle gaming to a degree( Emulators up to PS1,N64 , and below) , and i stream Netflix, Hulu, and a TVZION as well, with minimal issues. I Think they are like 60 bucks?
