No, a true rookie mistake is buying one of the several models that are specific to Chinese domestic market.
you got the mi box, original
be aware to DON't update the software
the original software is snappy and fast, the latest version always freezes and i have to unplug or the remote can't wake it up
Mi box s lacks ir port and no dtshd/truehd support, unlike the original version
And the software
Mibox s have a different remote controller, but both are the same hardware with the same function
I purchase mine over 4 years ago and still working like new
I have the original MiBox for 2 years now and it runs strong and never had an issue with any updates. Love mine and use as much as my shield.
Reddit these days has gone pretty quiet regarding serious mainstream show stopper bugs on Mi Boxes. The latest Firmware update for both of them squashed a bunch of annoying bugs, and most - the silent majority would be reasonably satisfied for the price paid.
More buttons on the remote is really all you are getting on the Mi Box "S" model.
The other cheaper legit Google Certified Android TV OS hardware, that is more powerful vs the Mi Boxes is the Android TV OS Pie 9.0 - MECOOL KM3/KM9. They however are not Netflix approved, so don't even try that sort of streaming:
Every since I upgraded my mi box to new Android it sucks. I have to constantly unplug it to get it to work again.
Mi box s 4k hands down
Nvidia shield! 😊
You made no rookie mistake. They are all the same, the only difference is on the Bluetooth and wifi controllers I believe. I have a mi box and I love it.
