Will the new Nvidia shield be a refresh or full upgrade?

by the-real-JCFrags

I want to get an Nvidia shield because it is the best android box with all the right features that I need and I know that with the Tegra X1 it is still the most powerful box but I am a bit hesitant in buying something with 4+ year old tech in it, especially since I want to be using it for at least 2-3+ years. With all the rumors is it possible that the new shield will have a new and better gpu, like a next gen Tegra X1 or is it just going to be a simple refresh with added Stadia optimization?

Or is it possible that sometime soon a competitor will release their own android tv box that is better and more powerful than the shield considering how much time they've had to catch up?

I don't need one for the next few months so I am fine waiting for a new model or a really good deal, but I just want to make sure that when I do I won't soon be regretting the purchase.

No one knows, but I feel like it's going to be just a minor hardware revision with maybe Stadia bundle thing and a new remote...maybe.

There have been two previous sets of rumors about a new shield one was correct and one was not so you have a 50/50 chance these are correct at best. If there is a new one I would imagine it's a full upgrade because imho a refresh would be a huge mistake at this point and why buy a refresh for more than you can get a 2017 for. If you can wait I would it's not like the 2017 will somehow dissapear when/if a new one is released.

Likely a refresh. My guess would be a new bundle with maybe the Stadia controller instead and marketing it as a super powered "Stadia console" for people that don't want more than just a CC Ultra. If there was a successor to the X1 then we would have heard about it long before we heard rumors of a new Shield model.

Either way, just wait for the new one. You've waited this long already. You don't need it for another few months. Just wait. You can't regret a purchase you never made in the first place.

I dunno if anyone has an inkling of competing with NVIDIA's Tegra X1 on the Android TV platform. I wouldn't hold my breath.

You should list the features you need then we can recommend one way or another from the rumors the newer nvidia will be able to play vp9 ver2. What do you want to use the shield for you need to list them to better understand. RPi 4 that was announced yesterday with powerful processor and gigabit port is probably capable of many things that nvidia shield is.
